Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed to join Saudi-funded league in US

Major champions Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed plan to sign up with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series so that rival circuits can start playing in U.S. cities, according to a British newspaper.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Greg Norman and his staff, who run LIV Golf Investments, plan to announce the last two departures from the PGA Tour on Friday.

The inaugural LIV Golf Invitational at Centurion Golf Club, featuring Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, is set to begin today.

Dichambo was among the initial recruiters in the Saudi League in January. That changed when Mickelson drew unwanted attention to the Newborn League with an interview that insulted Saudis who were financing PGA Tours and LIV golf investments.

Johnson was the biggest name to announce his support for the PGA Tour in February, and Dichambu followed suit.

“While there is a lot of speculation surrounding my support for another tour, I want to make it very clear that as long as the best players in the world are playing in the PGA Tour, I will do the same,” Dechambu said in a statement in February. .

Asked about his interest in the memorial last week, Dechambu said, “I personally don’t think I’m in a position in my career at the moment where I can take some risks.”

“I am loyal to my family which I have created with sponsors and everything around me. And right now, the golf world is probably going to change in some capacity. I don’t know what it is. It’s not my job to do it. I’ll just keep playing professional golf and Wherever you take me, I have to play with the best players in the world.

His agent said in a statement on Wednesday that “Bryson has always been an inventor.”

Brett Falcoff of GSE Worldwide said, “He’s always been curious about the opportunity to enter the ground floor with something unique. Professional golfers like us know this is changing and it’s happening fast.”

DeChambeau won the US Open at Wingfoot in 2020 when he fascinated golf with his out-of-the-box thinking that more speed and more power would change the game. He adds 40 pounds of muscle and mass and hits the driver with the speed of his ball 320 km / h. He also competed in the Long Drive exhibition.

Reid won the 2018 Masters for his only major. In addition to being known for his perseverance and short play, he was the main source of hacking in the U.S. gallery to remove sand from his golf ball in the Bahamas in 2019, a clear violation of the rules.

Players receive huge signing bonuses for joining the Norman’s League. The Telegraph reports that Johnson received $ 208 million in each of the eight LIV events on the schedule before competing for 34 million in funding.

Mickelson was asked if he was receiving 8 278 million.

“I think the contract agreement should be personal,” he said. “That doesn’t seem to be the case, but it should be.”

The first U.S. event for the LIV series is on the weekend of July 4th at Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon. The PGA Tour did not release its players to compete outside of London this week and some of them have given up their membership.

Oregon is different because the PGA Tour does not allow releases for tournaments held in North America. It remains to be seen whether the players will be able to return to the PGA Tour with Saudi money.

The US Open on Tuesday said it would honor players who qualified to compete at The Country Club outside Boston next week, and the British Open is expected to do the same.
