Devin Haney’s one-point win over George Cambosos has warned fans and promoters of a possible rematch, although the former Australian champion has said he will activate the “tomorrow” clause if he can.
Combosos was brave in defeats against great Americans and punched all day through Haney’s snapping left jab, although box scores show that Aussie landed more powerful shots and overall may not have been so credibly defeated when it came. Percentage of punches.
Of course the optics weren’t great, as Cambosos tried to get under the new 23-year-old champion, whose style was most pleasing to the eye. Each time Cambosos (20-1) tried to cut the ring, Haney used his boxing smart and either got involved with the Aussies, stopped his rhythm, or slipped on his way back to the center of the ring.
Cambosos paid the final price for giving fans the best fight possible, rather than cherry-picking another opponent to defend his first title, which was his first fight at home in five years.
As part of negotiations for Sunday’s fight, the pair agreed to a rematch clause that would see them fight again in Australia later this year, with Brisbane and Sydney being identified as possible venues, although the Cambosos camp has two fighting agreements with the Victorian government.
While Haney thanked the former champion for giving his shot, he was polite when asked about the possibility of a rematch at his post-war press conference, placing a condition on the follow-up bout, which was panned by the United States. Boxing world.

As happened: Haney’s unanimous decision won against Cambosos Jr.
“I need to talk to my dad, Bob (Arum), the top rank, and see what happens next, which makes the most sense,” Haney said. “At the end of the day, I’m an orderly fighter, but everything has to be understood.
“At the end of the day it’s a business. The world knows me, they know my character, and I’m not cheating or avoiding anyone.
“If they (his team) are ready for it, I’m ready for it. It’s a business, and before the fight, (Combosos) told me, ‘It must be understood.’ It makes sense. I have to take less money, travel, come without my father, we have made many sacrifices to make the fight happen. Everything has paid off. “
Speaking at the post-war press conference, Cambosos Jr. was adamant he would practice the genre.
“Yeah, 100 percent we’ll do it again,” he said.
“If I hadn’t given him this shot, he wouldn’t have gotten his moment now. They decided on him today, but I’m sure it would change if we turned it on again.
Cambosos Jr. added, “I felt the fight was very close.”
“What I was told, I overcame him, I overtook him, you saw the fight.
“He had a jolt but nothing more. I think he might have landed one or two right hands, but that’s the thing. There was really nothing else. My body doesn’t feel like I’ve gone through a pain. Round battles, like the one fought with Lopez.
“We will change the game plan and go back to the drawing board but my confidence will always be skyrocketing.
“It will make me even more hungry. The real champions are back. The greats. Mohammad Ali, Roberto Duran, all these guys are back and this is their legacy. I will come back even more hungry than before.”
No one questions Cambosos’ appetite, they never do. But Haney’s speed and natural talent will be hard to deal with. The Cambosos needed a close fight to disperse the fight and have done so in the past.
Yet Haney’s quick-fire jab, which didn’t connect to the high percentage at the start of the fight, was hard to bypass. Legendary coach Teddy Atlas also mentioned that the Sydney fighter would need a “proper ref” to allow this type of fight.
While Cambosos is sure he can make another upset and claim the belt a second time in the rematch, the former U.S. fighter, fan and boxing writer does not share Aussie optimism, and is not ashamed to reveal it on social media.
ESPN’s Mike Koppinger writes: “George Cambosos owes a rematch to Devin Haney in Australia later this year, and it’s not unfair after he agrees to give the American a shot. But after 12 mostly one-sided rounds, a rematch is a tough sell.”
US boxing expert Dan Raphael says: “Combosos has a rematch clause. No thanks.”
MMA writer Ariel Helwani tweeted: “Combosos has a rematch clause but they are not sure how they will sell it to the Aussie public again in a few months. It was quite one-sided.”
Haney and Cambosos continue slagfest
Robert Little writes: “Please do not practice the combosos rematch clause. Honey has no ability, speed or skill to deal with the locked person. What happened tonight will be repeated. Let’s all move on to something different.”
The warriors also chalked them up to two cents.
Earl Spence tweeted: “Shouldn’t be rematched haha”.
Sergio Mora added: “Contract rematch clauses should have ‘clauses’. Cannot be re-matched unless required, demanded or marketable.”
Ericsson Lubin says: “Good job from Devin, I don’t see the rematch being different, congratulations champion. Undisputed!”
Badu Jack writes: “No need to rematch.”
Haney, there are almost clashes in the Cambosos camp
Top-ranked Bob Aram, Hannie’s promoter, was not a fan of the rematch clause and said so at a post-match press conference, when Cambosos promoter Lu DeBella described the lack of a rematch clause in the contract as “promotional misconduct”, even if it was not popular.
“In the top rankings, we don’t want to give a rematch clause. You win, you win; you lose, you lose,” Arum said.
However, he was more diplomatic when asked if the Cambosos re-match clause should be activated.
“Of course he should,” the 90-year-old added. “Combosos always had a chance to lose the fight, which he did. So why don’t you keep the rematch clause?”
“What I think is bad about boxing is that there is a promoter named Eddie Horn in England. You can’t fight him unless you sign a rematch clause. It’s not good.
“I think rematch clauses are bad for boxing. I understand why fighters and promoters want them, it’s business but it’s bad for sports.”
