Spanish MotoGP rider Alex Espargaro missed a podium finish at the Catalonia Grand Prix won by Fabio Quarterro because the race ended in a lap before the end.
Espargaro was in second place on Sunday when he crossed the line from second to last lap, then picked up the throttle and began swinging to fans on the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit.
He realized his mistake a few times later and immediately returned to racing, finishing fifth.
“This is an unacceptable mistake in MotoGP,” said Espargaró “I saw the sign and forgot to say L0 (for Lap 0) instead of L1 (for Lap 1) at the end here. It was entirely my fault.”
Aprilia Ryder added: “The first thing is sorry for my team.
‘I didn’t have time to look in my lap so I saw the tower. It was my fault. I have to see my people, not the tower. ‘
Aspergaro, 32, stopped after crossing the line on the last lap and looked lonely. He bowed his head and put his hand on his helmet and sat on the bike for a while.
