You read the title. You know what’s going to happen. But you can’t be prepared for how great this drama is.
Wow! Here’s a sneak peek: Josh Bell hits Trevor Walker’s pitch in third place by Luis Guillermo. Juan Soto tries to be second, third. He was caught in a rundown and eventually finished third with Walker. Bell tries to get to the second place in the play. He’s going to get there! Walker threw the ball on the right field. But then Bell tries to be third in that wrong throw! And, oh, Francisco Linder tagged him trying to move on. Just incredible things.
It scores, ah, 5-6-1 FC, 9-6? Apparently the best part of the play is the bell being tagged while Soto is still lying on the dirt in the third base. (Presumably he intervened when he hit Walker on the sidewalk.)
Using baseball-references, I have seen in the most recent times that two players have been out in third place in the same game so that a ball caught in the air was not included. It came on August 19, 2019, when the Royals beat the Orioles 5-4.
This one includes an emphasis out, so it’s not exactly the same. But close enough! I’ve also enjoyed getting it since 2017, where Kendall Graveman tagged the two runners in third place in the same play.
No matter what kind of two-out-a-third game you’re watching, it’s a pretty fun scene.
