Australian coach Graham Arnold has said that their do-or-die qualifier against Peru at a neutral venue in Qatar will be played in their hands instead of their opponents.

Although intercontinental play-offs are usually played on two legs where each country hosts one, this time it is instead a sudden death game in Qatar, where there is a spot in the November World Cup.

Defender Jason Davidson said the weather and lack of home games were not an excuse.

“We had a good opportunity to prepare and adapt,” he told reporters on Monday.

“Players just have to go there, train and work.”

Arnold agreed, saying the two-week stay in Qatar was the longest time the team had been together – and the position would work for them.

“We are very familiar with the Middle East,” he said, quoting numerous scores of “home” games that the Scaroras played on neutral ground because of Kovid.

“We see this only as an advantage.”

What’s the risk?

It’s a game for all marbles. Australia will go to the World Cup if they win. If they lose, it’s going to be an earthquake moment for sports in this country.

The boom after 06 is good and really gone and although the standard of A-League is arguably higher than before, the public interest has declined. Missing the World Cup for the first time in 20 years is another brutal blow for Australian football.

Some have argued that a reset is what we need – both in terms of the national team and the development path below it. Tomorrow’s failure will probably help trigger such changes, but missing out on the biggest sporting event in the world is a disaster you can find in Silver Lining.

The next group stage got off to a brilliant start – Australia won each of their first three games, and had a chance to finish in the top two and go straight to Qatar.

Who are the main players in Peru?

Gianluca Lapadula, of Italian descent, has been a key source of the team’s goals since he was restricted by his mother’s country of birth in 2022. Both Christian Cueva and Andre Carrillo are dangerous, while talented midfielder Renato Tapia is likely to return from injury to face Australia. .
